Naval Combat Operations Center Orchestration (Concept)

The management process of the submarine is carried out through the Combat Operations Center (COC), which acts as a brain. The layout and structure of the COC in existing submarines can cause some significant obstacles in the operational process. Among the most prominent obstacles are the deterioration of the physical integrity of the COC, the negative impact on the concentration of the personnel and the reduction of the usable area. Existing COC consoles pose communication challenges due to their layout. These include operators facing away from the commander, limited visibility of operator screens for the commander, and the need for personnel to constantly move between consoles.

As HAVELSAN, we undertake the mission of addressing these problems in the submarine Combat Operations Center (COC) structure with our strong technologies. Identifying areas in need of improvement in the layout and determining design principles has been one of the first steps we have taken in the solution development process. Human and environment interaction is at the center of the concept design we have developed in alignment with our design principles.

Our expert team designed a layout for the submarine COC that prioritizes human perception, comprehension, and expectations. This user-centric approach minimizes personnel errors and boosts performance, unlocking the full potential of the system.

One of the distinctive aspects of our design is that it allows the submarine commander to be positioned at the center of consoles, devices, and systems arranged in a circular layout, enabling strong command and control over the submarine’s operations. In our concept design, promising modernization, console structures are designed to be suitable for the grasping abilities, physical needs, and technology of the personnel.

When creating the layout, compatibility with the duties and responsibilities of the Combat Operations Center (COC) personnel and business processes was taken into consideration. The design facilitates easy, unobstructed, face-to-face communication between the commander and the personnel, ensuring constant eye contact. The large screens displaying the tactical picture and submarine status information are positioned so that they can be seen by all Combat Operations Center (COC) personnel.
